SUMMER 2017                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Summer usually rewards us with lighter winds and calmer seas. We should see tightly packed schools of glass minnows nearshore as well as in the inlets. Pilchards and thread fin herring will be around the nearshore reefs. It’s pretty simple… Find the bait, find the fish. I look for false albacore, Spanish mackerel and tarpon to around these schools of glass minnows. If you hit it right it’s a blast! King mackerel, Cobia, barracuda and sharks will be shadowing the schools of pilchards and thread fins on the nearshore reefs.                                                                                                                Inshore the Ft Pierce inlet should have good catch and release snook fishing as well as over slot red fish and groupers. The Indian river will produce best the earlier you start. Traditionally our winter fishery produces good numbers of inshore species which can be caught on lures or live bait. Pompano, Bluefish and Spanish mackerel make their first appearance in mid December. They can be caught on jigs in and around the inlets and along the intra coastal channel edges and sand bars. Red fish, Black drum, Sheepshead and Croakers will stage up along the deeper mangrove shorelines  and docks.  Snapper and grouper will also be in the mix along the channel edges. Snook will remain available as long as the water temps stay in the 70 degree range. Spotted sea trout fishing will be at its best during the coldest weather as they will stage up in the deeper canals and holes during these cold fronts. I look forward to hearing from you. Despite the heat the bite has been good. Fishing around the inlet and just offshore has been steady with good amounts of bait and gamefish. As summer turns to fall the mullet run will really perk up the action. I will be running trips for tarpon, snook, and redfish around the inlets as the mullet migration gets underway. There will also be opportunity to catch False albacore and spanish mackerel as they feed on the schools of glass minnows that will be along the beaches and from now until october. Our fishery changes constantly and I am on top of these changes and will  put you in the best position to succeed given the conditions of the day we fish. As April transitions into May the winds lighten and the water temperatures warm .With rising water temps baitfish schools will move into the Indian River lagoon. The snook bite will heat up in the  and around the inlets. Redfish and sea trout will become more active on the flats. They will be in the shallows early and move to the drop offs as the sun gets higher. Tarpon will be showing up as the water temps get nearer the magic 78 degree mark.     When the conditions allow, we will have opportunity to venture out the inlets and fish the inshore reefs along the beaches for kings, cobia, tarpon, false albacore, snappers and black tip sharks. Most of this fishing is done with live shrimp fished with either popping corks or split shot depending on the depth of water. Snook will be available as long as the water temperature stays on the warm side. Spotted sea trout fishing will be at its best during the coldest weather as they tend to gang up in deeper holes and canals on cold fronts. I look forward to hearing from you. Bring the kids.
