February Fishing Forecast

The last couple of Februarys have been fairly mild. Taking advantage of the light wind conditions the last couple of seasons we have done very well fishing the inshore reefs along the beaches for a variety of species using live shrimp. in water depths ranging from 12-20 feet, sheepshead, snapper, spanish, and blues are readily available within close proximity to the inlets. It is not uncommon for anglers to catch 10 species or more. John Taylor fishing with his son Buck and grandson Ben lead the way with a 16 species day including a 6 pound permit a few weeks ago.

In the river the docks and mangrove shorelines will continue to yield sheepshead, black drum and reds.Depending on the water temperature the deeper channel edges will produce good catches of sheepshead, mutton snapper, as well as grouper, pompano, spanish, jacks and ladyfish. Fishing in deeper water will produce better results on most days.

The deeper grass flats both north and south of the inlet will produce trout and pompano though sometimes its hard to fight your way through the jacks and ladyfish to get to the more glamorous species.

It should be a fun month to bend a rod and get some sun.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Be well,

Capt. Charlie Fornabio
